Curly Hair Routine
Hello and welcome to the most intimate details of my curly hair routine. I'm actually in a bit of a curly hair curtailment lately - my hair isn't as curly as it used to be but I'm sure it'll bounce back soon. I prefer to wear my hair natural as it's very little maintenance once its dry and that's the life I'm about. Here's everything you need to know about how to get low maintenance, curly hair!
First off I only wash my hair once a week. It really doesn't need more than that. I used to wash it more often but the less you wash it the less it actually needs it. Your hair adapts to how often you wash it. If it's used to being shampooed every day it'll get oilier faster. If it isn't being shampooed every day it wont be as oily. Yes, it takes a bit of time to adapt but it's so worth it. Sometimes if I think it's lacking shape or needs life in the middle of the week I'll wash it only with conditioner. This sounds scary at first but I find I get the nicest curls when I do this (check out the no poo method for more deets on this). Doing this occasionally has helped the sleekness of my curls and my hair is much less frizzy. I have been loving the new Tresemรฉ Repair and Protect 7 conditioner as it feels so rich. It also contains no sulfate which is great.
To style my hair I use the OGX Morocan Curling Perfection Defining Cream when my hair is wet and work through it until it is all covered in product. The good thing about this styling cream is that you can't really put too much in. It soaks into the hair really well and helps define and smooth curls. I also love the Loreal Studio Pro Boost It mousse to style my hair which I use instead of the cream.
If the mood takes me I'll go through my hair section by section and twist it into curls in the direction it is naturally curling in. This gives really bouncy and corkscrew type curls. The hair holds the twist with the product and it dries much more curly when I do this. I'd really recommend twisting sections of your hair if its wavy / curly or frizzy as it helps define your curls beautifully.
To dry my hair I'll usually let it air dry for about a half an hour or so to take the wetness out and then go in with the hairdryer and diffuser attachment. This is so essential for curly hair. Like if you do nothing else, use a diffuser! It gives the same "scrunching" effect to you hair as you hands would but without any frizz and helps shape and form curls. The most important thing is to set your hairdryer on the lowest blowing setting and a mid to high heat. If you blast your hair on the highest blow setting you're defeating the purpose. Also a good tip is to hold the hairdryer and diffuser into a section of hair and don't move it for a minute or two. Then work to the next section. Moving the diffuser too quickly will create the world of frizz.
So there you have it. All of my deepest, darkest, curliest secrets. If you have trouble with your hair and think it's frizzy or not curly enough to leave it natural, try the steps above and see does it improve the condition of your curls. The day I embraced my curly hair and stopped straightening it (hello emo Sophie 2007-2009) was a day I have never looked back on.
You go, curl!
(ok that was bad)
If you need reminding of what I look like (HA) here's a recent enough picture of my hair in a mandatory pre- night out bathroom selfie |
